Sail To Lakshadweep
ABOUT LAKSHADWEEP ISLANDS
Lakshadweep, meaning "a hundred thousand islands", is India's smallest Union Territory, located in the Arabian Sea about 400 km off the Kerala coast. It is an archipelago of 36 islands, including 12 atolls, 3 reefs, 5 submerged banks and 10 inhabited islands.
Known for its pristine beaches, turquoise lagoons and rich marine life, Lakshadweep is a popular eco-tourism and adventure tourism destination. Major inhabited islands include Kavaratti (capital), Agatti, Minicoy, Kalpeni, Kadmat and Andrott. The islands are connected to the mainland primarily through Government operated passenger ships and High-Speed Crafts, operated between Kochi, Beypore, Mangalore, and the islands. Entry of tourists is regulated through a permit system to preserve the fragile ecosystem.
Regular flights link Lakshadweep to Kochi, and helicopter transfers run year-round from Agatti to Kavaratti. The tropical climate averages 27° C to 32° C, with the hottest months being April and May. The ideal time to visit is from October to March, while the monsoon season from June to October brings 10-40 mm of rain and high humidity, averaging 80-90 rainy days annually, with light to moderate winds from October to March.
Lakshadweep's economy is mainly based on coconut cultivation, tuna fishing and tourism, while its culture is influenced by South Indian and Arabian traditions. The region is famous for coral reefs, water sports and traditional island lifestyle.
